Ok, I put 10 into the game, all in view, no planets. Max graphic settings. Full screen. My rating was 90 FPS.

I downloaded and ran the 3D Mark SE 2001 test, build 330. My score was 14,744 3D Marks. (the test is 40 meg to download, but it is quite fun to watch).

My hardware is a nvidia 5900 standard with 128 meg memory. Intel Pentium 3.0 Gighertz with 1 Gig ram.

With 50 tugs in game, all in view, I get 38 FPS at 800x600. Anyone else get a chance to run this? I downloaded the terrapin off i-war2. It replaces the player comsec, which is supported by the sandbox.

38 frames is fully playable. It does drop some. If everyone had this level of hardware we could have some pretty major space battles.

Its really easy to get 10 tugs worth of ships on screen. A few freighters, some escorts, station, station defense, a few floating cargo pods. It adds up pretty quick. Good thing LOD exists.

I wanted to seperate out the added simulation load of 50 ships from the visual render. So I reran the test, flew near the tugs, and then looked away from them. With no tugs visible, I had 90 fps.

The cause seems to be simulation. I expect if all those tugs were moving about, they would be chewing up AI timeslice as well.

Sorry it has taken me so long to run this. I've been slammed lately.

My results were not so favorable. I ran the same tests under the same conditions GT did. Here's my results:

No Terrapins: 18 FPS

1 Terrapin: 17 FPS

5 Terrapins: 13 FPS

10 Terrapins: 10 FPS

20 Terrapins: 8 FPS

Pretty dismal, huh? I've really got to upgrade.

My machine specs:

HP 310n
1.1 GHz Inetl Processor
512 Mb Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 (64 Mb)

OMG! Ok, I am very glad we did this. I have a totally messed up view of how much stuff I can put on screen. 20 FPS is about the lowest I have found that is still playable. I clearly need to put together a slower box for testing.

Shane, could you try the same thing with lower graphic settings but the same 800x600 resolution? I wonder how much is lighting effects vs polygons.

Well, this does bring up the minimum spec issue. Has anyone seen a 3D mark to hardware rating? I cannot find anything like it on the Futuremark site.

Just for amusement, I downloaded the latest 2005 beta Futuremark test. I get between 1.5 and 3 FPS in those tests. Geeze. I wonder what kind of hardware that was designed to test?

Okay. Here's the same tests run at the lowest graphic quality settings.

No Terrapins: 18 FPS

1 Terrapin: 17 FPS

5 Terrapins: 14 FPS

10 Terrapins: 11 FPS

20 Terrapins: 9 FPS

Result: Almost no change at all. Something's gone screwy. Tomorrow I'll look through my settings and see what's going on.

Shane, there is probably something wrong there.
With your specs and that Video card I would guess that you'll probably get around 3500 3DMarks (using the 2001 test version)

Converted to EOC I would expect something more like

No Terrapins: 48 FPS

1 Terrapin: 37 FPS

5 Terrapins: 24 FPS
