Hello and welcome to our community! The last and only one, so to say.
Is the game asking you to put the CD in when you first start it?
The button to start Singleplayer is usually missing when it can't find a CD drive.

Yes, there is. You can install WinCDEmu from here:
wincdemu.sysprogs.org/
This creates a virtual CD drive and should be enough for the game to run. If it doesn't, load any ISO file into WinCDEmu, for example this one:
www.slackware.com/~alien/slackboot/mini/...4.1-mini-install.iso
If you are on Windows 8 or 10, you don't even need additional programs, you can load the ISO directly in Windows and that gives you a virtual CD drive

We have so many of them, I can't really pick one.
But I suggest you should try out the biggest ones - Buda5 and Torn Stars
And maybe you should start the game with Custom Jafs and the Location Finder - they make the game way more fun:

To be honest, I consider Custom Jafs and the Location finder a necessity rather than just a mod. Besides, BUDA and Torn Stars are more like Total Conversions, so they don#t necessarily fall into the category Mowgli might have had in mind.
