Why Cant I control my ship manually!?!?!?!

Why can i only fly forward, back, left or right? How can i look up or down? or maybe mouse look? Does anyone else have this problem. I thought i was the lateral thrusters but i help them down and nothing was different. I have looked in all the control guides and tryed all the buttons aswell!!!. PLEASE HELP ME!!! Im stuck using auto pilot to look at a ship behind me!!!!

Gazmaster. Have you tried turning off flight assist (press N)? With flight assist off you can turn on your axis i.e. when in assisted mode and moving forward, if you pull up, the ship will use all its thrusters to turn itself about so as to face the other way. With assisted flight turned off the ship will continue moving forward but will swing over facing the other way.

It takes some practise, but this is effectively the manual control you're looking for.
