Now I've been able to put up with the high difficulty of the game so far, but the freighter escort mission in Act 2 has pushed me to the point of quitting.
Ater becoming an EXPERT at taking out the mine field, dodging a million missiles, and taking out those damned mauruder ships I still fail the mission. After formating with the freighters and entering LDS everything goes fine until someone fires an LDSi missle. Before I even get a second to defend the freighters from attack I just get an instant mission failed - Clay : "Those freighters are defenceless".
What am I doing wrong?

I believe the key here is distance.
Ever notice when you formate with a ship which immediately engages LDS drives, you lag behind a little? While you lag in 'follow-mode' (as I call it), if you fire a LDSi missile you'll overshoot the craft by about 300 km.
For this reason I don't ever formate with a craft during a mission unless I've placed myself where I want to be (usually close by to the right of the ship so I can keep an eye on it).
Let us know if it doesn't work.

This was no disciplined march; it was a stampede-- without order and without a goal, six million people unarmed and unprovisioned, driving headlong. It was the beginning of the rout of Civilisation... of the massacre of Mankind."

Also, the freighters will just sit there until the player formates with one. This can be used to your advantage, as the freighters have a autorepair, albeit a very slow one. So, before formateing (is that a word?) with a freighter, make sure that all of them are at 100%. After each attack, go and get a sandwich or something while you wait for the freighters to heal.

Thx for the help!
Actually I worked out what the problem was - a weird bug that was effectively duplicating the mission. I was getting twice the number of waypoints, twice the amount of dialogue, twice the amount of mines, twice the amount of enemy ships to fight and twice the amount of freighters to protect. When I entered LDS with one lot of freighters, the other lot must have stayed behind unprotected failing me the mission. Weird huh?
Not the strangest bug I've seen though. Just a moment ago I was waiting for my ship to enter the L-Point when it suddenly just decided to fly off of the screen of it's own accord (I always have the external view), leaving the camera where it was. I was like "Oi! Where do you think you're going?!"

That bug was fixed, together with a couple of other simular bugs in the game, by the patch (version F14.6). If you haven't installed it yet you should.
